Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge System in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in implementing video review technology.

Replay technology will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Players are granted the right to question certain decisions from the official, echoing the practice already in use at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

The new system will be operational on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development follows just a season following the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to review other decisions, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance end of a point.

Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a competitor can ask for.

Practical Application

A recent example took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire viewed a replay and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

This technology are not new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

Another change at The Championships this year will be the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was in or out.

Finally, with precisely 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
